What is Lutheran?
Join us for a five week sermon series on Martin Luther and his teachings in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
October 1 - Martin Luther: the Man, the Myth, the Legend
This year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the reformation, which was kicked off on October 31, 1517 when a young priest named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg, Germany. This first week we learn about his influential life.
October 8 - The Solas: Grace, Faith, Scripture
The early reformers sought to lift up the core principles of the Christian faith and life, in Latin: Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), Sola Fide (Faith Alone), and Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone).
October 15 - Sinners & Saints
The church, which is the people of God (not a building or an organization), is messy and holy. As Christians we live in this paradox as sinners (people who need a right relationship with God) and saints (people who already have right relationship with God).
October 22 - Where is God? Not Where You Might Expect (Youth Confirmation Day)
The Theology of the Cross, a foundational Lutheran teaching, assures us that the cross is God’s promise to be present in the last place you might expect: in the midst of suffering, oppression, violence, and even death.
October 29 - Always Reforming (Reformation Day 2017)
The Reformation started 500 years ago, but has not ended yet (and won’t end). God’s Spirit continues to move in churches around the world (and right here at Elk River Lutheran) continuing to call us
