9:30AM Summer Worship

This summer Elk River Lutheran Church will combine worship times to hold a single 9:30AM Summer Worship Service Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. We will resume our regular 8:30AM Traditional Worship & 10:30AM Contemporary Worship schedule on September 11, 2022.

Please note that the 9:30AM Worship time technically begins Sunday, May 22, with our Joint Outdoor Worship Service at 9:30AM, followed by our Downtown Block Party from 11:00AM-1:00PM. So please plan to bring a chair to worship and consider signing up to help volunteer at the block party: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a084dacab2ca6f49-elkriver1

Why this change and why such short notice?
I apologize for the announcement of this change coming now. For the past few months the church council and I have had conversations about the best way forward this summer when we will be short staffed (missing Pastor Jeremy who is leaving for his first call in Worthington and Taylor who will be gone for three months on sabbatical). Over the last few weeks our options for primary musical leadership in Taylor’s absence at the 10:30AM Contemporary Worship service have fallen through. I worry that piecing together musical leadership would deliver questionable results and that both attendance and the overall worship experience may suffer. In contrast, by putting all of our energy from planning and executing both services into a single service, I think we’ll be able to provide a wonderful, lively worship experience every week. I am normally not a fan of changing worship times because of how it messes with people’s routines and worship preferences, but I believe it is our best option for this summer.

Benefits of a 9:30AM Summer Worship Service
There are certainly benefits to combining our worship services this summer, including:
  • Relief in scheduling volunteers, musicians, and preparing bulletins and Powerpoint.
  • Allowing members from the different services to worship and enjoy fellowship together.
  • Embrace traditional hymns and worship elements, while also incorporating some contemporary music.
  • Rather than only people at the contemporary service experiencing special guest musicians, like Rachel Kurtz, everyone can hear them.
  • Provide our band and musicians opportunities to be involved with leading music throughout the summer, without having to feel the burden of leading more than they are comfortable.
  • A single service will feel very well attended and have a great energy.

To reiterate the logistics of this time change, here is the schedule:
  • May 15 - 8:30AM Traditional Worship & 10:30AM Contemporary Worship
  • May 22 - 9:30AM Joint Outdoor Worship followed by the Downtown Block Party
  • May 29 - (Memorial Day Weekend -Labor Day) 9:30AM Summer Worship (indoors)
  • September 11 - Return to 8:30AM Traditional Worship & 10:30AM Contemporary Worship

Thank you for your flexibility in making this worship time adjustment. We have had to make so many changes and practice adaptability so much over the last few years, and I am so grateful for your grace and kindness. I look forward to many joyful worship services this summer!

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Nathan
