RESOURCES FOR UNDERSTANDING RACISM
To confront racism in America forces us to confront both our past and our privilege. It forces to deal with the places where racism has existed in our families or origin, and where we have benefited while others have been treated as less than equal. This work is neither easy or comfortable but we called to the work of justice, mercy, and reconciliation. You will find a page of various resources from books to websites to help you engage in the conversation and to wrestle with these larger questions of racial injustice and equity. We invite you to join us in the conversation in the coming days, months and years as we find our compassion and voice in the work of justice. https://www.elkriverlutheran.org/understanding-racism.html |
COLORING BOOK
Helps young children and families talk about their experiences and feelings related to COVID-19 and the need to shelter in place. In the story, the coronavirus has spread to Littletown causing changes in everyone's lives. The story opens doors to conversations about COVID-19, ways that families and communities are working together to keep safe from the virus, family and community strengths, common challenges and reactions in children and adults, ways that families support children and each other, and our intense gratitude for frontline workers. APP
Pray As You Go - This is Jesuit (Catholic) devotional app that you can find in the Google or Apple App Store, and there is also a website (https://pray-as-you-go.org/). They produce daily audio devotions that include music, scripture, and time for reflection and prayer. It is Catholic, so it talks about saints sometimes, but that’s never bothered me. And it’s recorded in Scotland so I’ve always enjoyed their accents. |
PODCAST
Unlocking Us, Brene Brown - This is a very new podcast hosted by Brene Brown, a well known author, speaker, and researcher who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. (https://brenebrown.com/) I have been familiar her work before, but during this quarantine time Brown has started this new podcast and I love the way she communicates and reflects on the complex emotions that we’re all experiencing during this time. So much of her work is great, but I highly recommend finding her Unlocking Us podcast, which can be found wherever you download podcasts. |
DEVOTIONAL PRACTICE
Lectio Divina - If you want to read your Bible some, but struggle to know where to start or feel like you don’t have a strong enough academic understanding of what’s going on, the practice of Lectio Divina might be a great tool for helping you to explore scripture. This is an ancient devotional way of reading and re-reading scripture while making time and space to listen to what God might be saying to you through a passage of scripture. It’s not about learning the history or background of a text, it’s about allowing God to speak to you through a text. Click this link for more detailed instructions for how to practice Lectio Divina: https://bustedhalo.com/ministry-resources/lectio-divina-beginners-guide |
DEVOTIONAL
"Powered By Love" ERLC Expressions of Faith and Devotion - ERLC members and friends were mailed a devotional in the fall of 2019 full of stories and writings from ERLC members. This book is a wonderful resource to repeatedly go back to for inspiration and devotion of how God has worked in the lives of those in our community. If you did not get one, contact the church office as there are still a few available. |
